Hillandale Golf Course was donated to the Durham, N.C., community in 1911 through the philanthropic interests of long-time Durham resident John Sprunt Hill. The original nine holes were designed by renowned golf course architect Donald Ross, with the remaining nine designed by Perry Maxwell.
In 1960, the Hillandale Golf Course was moved to its current location and was redesigned by George Cobb, who designed the Surf Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Hillandale is the Granddaddy of Durham area golf courses, playing an average of 45,000 rounds annually and nearly 1.7 million rounds since 1960. This popularity can easily be attributed to its user-friendly design, which provides a challenge to players of all skill levels. As the oldest course in Durham, generations of families have grown up on the friendly fairways of Hillandale Golf Course.
Hillandale Golf Course is home to the nationally-acclaimed Hillandale Golf Shop. The Hillandale Pro Shop was named the #1 golf shop in America in 1988, 1989, 1992 and 1999. Golfers travel from miles around, knowing that Hillandale will have whatever it is they need, and will provide them with the opportunity to demonstrate the clubs on the course's full-service outdoor driving range.
As Durham's community golf course, Hillandale has played host to several premier amateur tournaments. The Durham Herald-Sun Tournament is a week-long match-play event comprised of golfers shooting anywhere from sub-par into the hundreds. The prestigious Durham Amateur boasts fields that would rival any national amateur event, and has become a springtime "must play" on all amateurs' schedules. The Bull City Invitational, one of the largest minority tournaments on the East Coast, calls Hillandale home, and finally, the Hillandale Junior Tournament has played host to some 4,000 competitors since its humble inaugural tournament with 17 participants.
Hillandale Golf Course strives to be a community leader by hosting many special interest groups, such as Special Olympics, Inter-City Youth groups sponsored by the Durham City Police Department and Play Golf America programs, including Link Up 2 Golf. Several high school golf teams, as well as the North Carolina Central golf team call Hillandale home and make full use of all the facilities.
The environment is also a major focus at Hillandale. On course is the North Carolina State University Wetlands Restoration program, where students and faculty are provided with numerous hands-on learning experiences. Also, the Ellerbee-Neuse River Basin renovation and beautification project will greatly impact the community and provide increased water filtration and visual enhancement to the area.
